The love of money is idolatry

Matt 6:24 “No-one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

The love of money causes all kinds of evil

1 Tim 6:9-10 “People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Here are some of those evils: dishonesty; theft; bribery, oppression, injustice, selfishness, extortion, miserliness

The love of money causes arrogant presumption

1 Tim 6:17 “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”

The love of money creates anxiety

Eccl 5: 12 “The sleep of a labourer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep.”

The love of money characterises godless society

2 Tim 3:2 “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy…”

The love of money leads to discontentment

Heb 13:5 “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”

Eccl 5:10 “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.”

The love of money disqualifies from Christian leadership

1 Pet 5:2 “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers– not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve”
